Today I was giving my son a math lesson on forming groups.  Using counting bears, I asked him to form 5 groups of bears with 4 bears in each group.  He struggled and we worked on it together on two seperate occassions.  Then I asked him to do it by himself.  That’s when he really struggled, but I knew he could do it.  I pushed him and pushed him, and just when he was about to give up, I gave him the pep talk of his life.

3 minutes later he yelled, “Mommy, I did it!!”  I came into the room and saw that my son created 5 groups of bears with 4 bears in each group, just like I asked him to.  He was beeming with pride 😀 !!!

And to my surprise, he jumped up and said, “Mommy, I’m so proud of you for teaching me!!  And I’m so happy I did it by myself!!”  Then he gave me a really BIG HUG.

That was such a huge reward for me, I’ll have the motivation now to homeschool for the next 3 months.

I recently subscribed to Scholastic Printables and I love all the worksheets and features they have!!!  If you haven’t heard of it, click the logo or follow the PROMO link below and look at the thousands of worksheets, lesson plans and activity pages they have.  You can create your own custom worksheets and store up to 10MB of documents in your account file cabinet.

You have to be a teacher to subscribe to this service.  No big deal! I signed up as a homeschooler and paid $39.99 for one year.  I spend a lot less time searching the internet for worksheets now and more time planning my lessons.

Here’s a special PROMO link I was sent from Scholastic that will give you 500 Scholastic Book Club Bonus Points for signing up.

FYI- I will be sharing some of the worksheets I find and create on this blog.

I spend a lot of time these days running around trying to find free deals and stockpiling for a rainy day.  As a result, my office became really cluttered and disorganized.  That’s ironic because I run a Professional Organizing company :-D.  Nobody’s perfect and I definitely got my act together, especially now that I want to teach my son at home.  I knew exactly where I wanted to set him up for school.  I put my organizing skills to work and got it done.

Here’s what my office looked like before I started:

My son loves his new homeschooling space!!!  He keeps coming into the office and asking to sit at his desk.  He is definitely ready to learn.

FYI- I let my 5-year old son help me put the desk and chair together.  He also colored the little flowers on the wall.

I have just chosen my very first math curriculum for homeschooling my 5-year old this year.  I chose to go with Singapore Math based on a review given by Cathy Duffy, author of 100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum.

Since my child is slightly ahead and loves math, I decided to start off with the Earlybird Kindergarten Math Textbook B.

Does anyone have any experience using this curriculum?  If so, please share your opinions with me.
